The "urbanCLIM - Climate adaptation strategies in urban areas" workshop (June 4 and 5 in Bremen)
was a big success, engaging stakeholders in key earth observation industries.
In a world characterized by changing environmental conditions, the importance of sustainable,
efficient and, above all, effective adaptation strategies in urban areas is becoming increasingly
important. In order to be able to develop these adaptation strategies, we need suitable and
accessible technical solutions that prepare informed decisions and thus support planning processes
for cities and large-scale infrastructures. Important key skills are the application-specific acquisition,
management, processing and presentation of geodata.
The urbanCLIM workshop offered an interdisciplinary and inter-institutional opportunity to exchange
ideas about climate adaptation strategies in urban areas and the associated data processing, to
expand one's own network and to participate in the results of publicly funded research and
development projects.
The first day started with two keynotes on the topics of sustainability (Daniela Schmidt, board
member of OHB SE) and urban weather (Joerg Kachelmann, founder of the Kachelmann Group).
Our partners, the city of Karlsruhe, the State Office for Geoinformation Bremen and the city of Essen, then gave us an insight into the needs of urban spaces. The next session of the day focused on concrete options for action, from dealing with heat islands to weather forecasting on the urban
climate scale to options for large-scale monitoring of vegetation and infrastructure. On day 2, there
was a “marketplace” that offered the opportunity for networking and personal exchange.
