Citizen Science Campaigns in the CityCLIM Pilot Cities

Authors: Uta Koedel and Christine Liang

Thank you to the citizen scientists of the CityCLIM pilot cities!

Valencia: The climate of Valencia is a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot, dry

summers. The average temperatures in summer is 28°C - 32°C and reaches higher maxima (up to

40°C) at some days. In Valencia, 20 weather enthusiasts have agreed to actively support the project by installing and maintaining 15 weather stations in their backyards or on their balconies. They are also using 10 mobile sensors to collect meteorological data in the city to get a detailed picture of, for example, small-scale temperature variations.

Karlsruhe: In Karlsruhe, 72 people showed interest in CityCLIM citizen science activities to measure

meteorological parameters with a mobile MeteoTracker sensor. To ensure an even coverage of the

collected data, we selected the people mainly based on their routes. However, by sharing the

equipment, we achieved a good gender distribution with 12 women and 13 men cycling. A lot of

valuable data has already been collected and we would like to thank everyone for their help.

Thessaloniki: In Thessaloniki, 8 citizens participated in data collection with the MeteoTrackers. With

the stationary weather stations, the approach was to involve schools, which was a big success! In

total, 15 schools were involved, which reached over a thousand students, educators, school

directors, and locals.
